This website stores history obtained from primary accounts. The oral histories documented on this website were conducted by students from Githens Middle School in Durham, NC. The oral history experience provides opportunities for students to hear first hand accounts about the civil rights movement. It further provides an opportunity for civil rights veterans to archive moments in history that have remained unheard by so many but serve as historical trademarks and turning points in the history of the Civil Rights Movement as we know it today.

History of Githens Middle School
In 1965 Sherwood Githens Junior High School was built adjacent to the current Jordan High School on Garrett Road. The school was named after Sherwood Githens, Jr., who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1936 with a Ph.D. in Physics. During his career he taught at Harvard, Baylor, Duke and Wake Forest. In 1988 our current building was completed on land that was formerly owned by Sherwood Githens, Jr. Githens currently serves sixth through eighth graders. |
